Boy Abunda as Tourism Secretary?

Old friend, spokesman are latest appointees

Apparent president-elect Sen. Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino 3rd on Monday said that entertainment television host Boy Abunda is being considered for a Cabinet post or another government position, citing Abunda’s strong marketing and communication skills.

Abunda is a close friend of Aquino’s youngest sister, popular TV and movie celebrity Kris Aquino Yap.

“He [Abunda] is an icon in the country… for his ability to communicate, to understand the audience and advance a particular set of ideas,” Aquino told reporters after his meeting with European Union ambassadors at his residence on Times Street in Quezon City.

“Come to think of it, from a marketing prospective, things that you would want to market the Philippines for, he will be a good communicator,” he said, neither confiriming nor denying whether Abunda would be offered the Tourism portfolio.

When asked if he has informed Abunda about a possible government position in his administration, Aquino replied, “Parang may nabanggit na atang, ‘Mukhang OK ka sa ganito’ [I think it has been mentioned to him that he would be right for this job],” adding, “[but the problem is], how much does Abunda earn a week? How much will his salary be a year in government? And you have to divest if you become a Cabinet member.”
