Dr. Soe Nyunt-u, the World Health Organization (WHO) representative to the Philippines, told apparent president-elect Sen. Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino 3rd on Thursday to raise taxes on tobacco to discourage children from starting the habit.
Aquino has come under fire from anti-smoking advocates for his refusal to quit smoking immediately.
“As [a health authority], we would advise him to quit,” Soe was quoted as saying in a report by GMANews.TV. “But it is his personal choice [and] we just hope that he would support in increasing tax for tobacco.”
