The Miss Gay & Miss Transsexual Australia International beauty pageant is celebrating its 10th anniversary with the theme, “Colours of Diversity”. Twenty drag queens and transwomen from all over the country and overseas will represent their community and culture in this alternative mission oriented pageant competition.
The Melbourne-based pageant for drag queens and transgender women, which started in 2010 and now seen as the largest Australian-based pageant of its kind in the world, will be held in on February 2 at Williamstown Town Hall.
In its first year, the iconic event – which aims to promote inclusion, diversity and equality for the LGBTQIA+ community – attracted 300 people at a nightclub in St Kilda.
The pageant has since grown into a centrepiece for Australian and international contestants, sponsors and supporters that promotes acceptance of drag queens and transgender women as well as needy charities and platforms.
Pageant founder Gayzha Davao – who runs Trans Angels Victoria Incorporated and Trans Pageant Australia International, two not-for-profit events marketing agencies – expects about 1000 attendees this year. The event which is held during the Midsumma Festival is a recipient of the Hobson’s Bay Council 2018-2019 major event sponsorship.
“Miss Gay & Miss Transsexual Australia International is a celebration of drag queens and transgender women,” said Ms Davao on the pageant’s growth.
“We have had a wonderful 10 years of working to increase the visibility of, provide a voice for, and, promote inclusion, diversity and equality for the LGBTQIA+ community, and look forward to making the pageant even better in years to come.”
Contestants will also take part in various charity and community engagements including the Australia Day Parade, Midsumma Carnival and Midsumma Pride March.
This year, a showcase of some of the pageant’s winners and current contestants, titled Showgirls, will be staged on January 31 at Pride of Our Footscray – a local community-run bar in Melbourne’s inner west – to celebrate the pageant’s 10th anniversary.
Sponsored by the City of Hobson Bay and being held and the grand Williamstown Town Hall, this year’s 10th-anniversary Pageant is expected to be a sellout event.
