FORMER president Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino III passed away on Thursday. Former Department of Interior and Local Government Secretary Mar Roxas has confirmed this today. Aquino was 61.

“PNoy RIP (rest in peace). [He] was rushed to hospital early this morning and passed after efforts to revive failed. Please pray for him. Salamat (Thank you),” Roxas said in a statement.

Initial reports said Aquino was taken to the Capitol Medical Center in Quezon City early Thursday for undisclosed reasons.

Aquino served as the country’s 15th president from June 2010 to June 2016. He was succeeded by Rodrigo Roa Duterte. He popularised the “Daang Matuwid” and “Kayo ang Boss Ko” slogans during his administration.

The former president was the son of pro-democracy icons, the late president Corazon Aquino and former senator Benigno Aquino Jr. He was born in Manila on February 8, 1960.

In December 2019. Aquino was confined at a Makati hospital for a week to undergo a scheduled medical checkup.
