4 famous sport matches between Australia and the Philippines

Previous posts

People in the Philippines love sports. Whether it’s basketball, boxing, cricket or any other sport, Filipinos are there to cheer for their favourite teams or players. It’s a part of the culture, just like it is in many other countries.

Australia is just as passionate about their teams. They have a lot of pride when it comes to international sports, so when these two go head to head, it’s always a great match up.

Below we have listed four sport matches between Australia and the Philippines so you can get an idea of how intense these games can get:

2018 FIBA basketball match in Manila

On one fateful evening on the 2nd of July 2018, the Australian and Philippine basketball teams faced off against each other for the 2019 FIBA Basketball World Cup qualifying tie. What should have been an exciting game turned out to be a nightmare for both teams when a massive brawl broke out between the players.

The aftermath of the brawl led to 13 players being ejected from the game, including 10 Filipinos and three Australians. The Philippine national team no longer had enough players to continue the game, so the game ended early in favour of Australia.

Both the Australian and Philippine teams also had to issue formal apologies afterwards.

2022 FIBA U17 basketball match in Doha

With the brawl behind them, the younger Filipino basketball players went to Doha with the intention of snagging a win against the Australians. For the most part, Gilas Youth did well. They held their lead all the way through to the first five minutes of the third quarter, albeit uncomfortably.

Once the first five minutes of the third quarter ticked away, the Crocs turned the game around and took the lead. Gilas Youth ultimately lost to the Crocs, 109-83, costing them a spot at the U17 Basketball World Cup.

2022 Women’s Asian Cup football match in Mumbai

Australian football player Sam Kerr has been commanding the attention of the football world recently, but that’s not why this game is important. That distinction belongs to Alen Stajcic, the current manager for the Philippines. He was previously the manager for the Australian Matildas before being sacked.

Despite preventing the Matildas from scoring for a while, the Philippine defence crumbled in the second half. They ultimately lost 0-4, which is unfortunate considering their previous win against Thailand in the group stage.

2022 AFF Women’s Group stage match in Manila

The Philippine booters got their revenge against the Matildas during the 2022 AFF Women’s Championship. Although Australia sent their U23 team to participate in the tournament for the first time, the disciplined Filipinas won 1-0 against them, effectively recovering from their heartbreak regarding the Women’s Asian Cup.

This group stage win against the Matildas ultimately led to the Philippines winning the entire tournament, which the Philippines hosted that year.
