The Victorian Government has recently announced a significant boost in funding for multicultural festivals and events across the state. With the aim of promoting cross-cultural understanding, community connection, and social cohesion, the government is providing $1.3 million in grants to 346 organizations.
These grants will enable the delivery of vibrant events that celebrate and showcase Victoria’s diverse cultures and communities. Under the flagship Multicultural Festivals and Events program, the government prioritises applications from new and emerging communities, ensuring they receive over 65 per cent of the total funding allocation.
Showcasing Cultural Heritage
Victoria’s multicultural festivals and events provide platforms for cultural exchange, fostering understanding and appreciation among diverse communities. Among the successful grant recipients are the Melbourne Bengali Association, hosting the Multicultural Spring Festival; the Benalla Migrants Association, organizing the Diwali Festival; and the Afghan Women’s Organisation Victoria, receiving support for their Afghan Women’s Eid Festival. These events serve as celebrations of cultural diversity, bringing people together and promoting unity.
Regional Diversity: Zinda Multicultural Festival
The Loddon Campaspe Multicultural Services has received grants to support Bendigo’s Zinda Multicultural Festival, which celebrates the growing diversity in regional Victoria. Since its launch in 2018, the festival has become a focal point for the vibrant community of the greater Bendigo area. Showcasing music, food, art, and culture, the Zinda Multicultural Festival fosters connections and celebrates the multicultural heritage of the region.
Investing in Multicultural Festivals: Victorian Budget 2023/24
The Victorian Government’s commitment to multiculturalism is evident through its investment of an additional $12 million over four years in more than 25 multicultural festivals and events. This ongoing support ensures the continued success and growth of festivals such as the African Music and Cultural Festival, Melbourne Italian Festa, Lonsdale Greek Festival, Polish Festival, Hispanic Latin American Festival, Tamil Festival, and Springvale Lunar New Year. These celebrations promote cultural diversity, pride, and a sense of belonging among diverse communities.
Long-Standing Commitment: Supporting Multicultural Festivals
The Victorian Government has committed to continuing support for multicultural festivals and events throughout the state. Since November 2014, over $25 million in funding has been provided, enabling the delivery of nearly 10,000 festivals and events. Minister for Multicultural Affairs Colin Brooks acknowledged the significance of these celebrations, stating, “Victoria embraces multiculturalism through a diverse array of events and festivals that celebrate the thriving cultures and communities across our state.”
A Catalyst for Social Cohesion
The Multicultural Festivals and Events grants program aims to serve as a catalyst for social cohesion, fostering cross-cultural interactions and unity among diverse communities. By encouraging community participation and providing platforms for cultural expression, these festivals will contribute to the rich tapestry of Victorian society.
Minister Colin Brooks emphasised the program’s value, stating, “The Multicultural Festivals and Events grants program is invaluable in supporting our state’s diverse communities, and I’ve been lucky enough to see just how many members of our community benefit from these shared cultural celebrations.”
The grants provided are expected to empower communities to showcase their cultural heritage, strengthen social bonds, and promote cross-cultural understanding. These festivals serve as vibrant platforms for celebrating diversity, breaking down barriers, and building a more inclusive and harmonious society in Victoria. With ongoing investments and support, multicultural celebrations continue to flourish, creating a sense of pride, unity, and cultural appreciation throughout the state.
