Filipino-Australian Rugby Star Justin Coveney to Represent Philippines in Netflix’s Global Competition Series Physical: Asia

Filipino-Australian national rugby icon Justin Coveney has been officially announced as a competitor for Team Philippines in the highly anticipated Netflix global competition series Physical: Asia, premiering worldwide on October 28, 2025.

The international series will showcase elite athletes from eight Asian nations—Australia, Japan, Korea, Thailand, Indonesia, Turkey, Mongolia, and the Philippines—battling through a gauntlet of extreme challenges testing strength, endurance, and strategic prowess.

Among the standout names on Team Philippines are legendary boxing world champion Manny Pacquiao and Justin Coveney, the Philippines’ most capped national rugby player and a central figure in the rise of rugby in the country.

A Champion On and Off the Field

Born and raised in Sydney, Australia, Justin Coveney has proudly worn the jersey of the Philippine national rugby team, the Volcanoes, since 2010, racking up a distinguished career that includes:

  • Two Southeast Asian Games Gold Medals (2015, 2019)
  • 2013 Rugby World Cup Sevens appearance
  • Participation in two Asian Games
  • Multiple campaigns at the iconic Hong Kong Sevens

In addition to his national team accomplishments, Coveney’s professional rugby journey took him across Japan’s elite Top League, where he represented powerhouse clubs such as Coca-Cola Red Sparks, Ricoh Black Rams, Kamaishi Seawaves, and Chubu Electric Power.

A Life of Excellence and Dedication

Off the pitch, Coveney is as accomplished as he is on it. A qualified lawyer educated in Australia, he is also a certified World Rugby Level 1 & 2 Strength Coach. His drive for excellence is matched by his devotion to family—he is a husband to Hadassah Coveney and a father of three, including fraternal twins.

Coveney’s selection for Physical: Asia further cements his status as a symbol of Filipino athletic pride on the global stage. Known for his resilience, discipline, and humility, he embodies the spirit of the competition and the heart of a champion.

Physical: Asia is the latest installment in Netflix’s hit competition series franchise, following the success of Physical: 100. This new edition brings together top-tier athletes from across Asia to face off in a series of physically grueling and mentally taxing challenges, promising intense competition and high-stakes drama.

The series premieres globally on October 28, 2025, exclusively on Netflix.

Follow Justin Coveney’s journey and cheer on Team Philippines as they go head-to-head with Asia’s finest in one of the most demanding competitions ever televised.
