Filipino nurses, healthcare leaders and academics from Australia and overseas met in Sydney for the 6th International Filipino Nursing Symposium, highlighting leadership, research, education and collaboration within the profession. The event also recognised nurses and advocates for their contributions to healthcare while reinforcing the growing influence of Filipino nurses on the global stage.
Filipino nurses from Australia and overseas shared ideas on leadership, education, research and professional development during the 6th International Filipino Nursing Symposium held on 16 May at the Australian Catholic University campus in North Sydney.
Hosted by the Filipino Nursing Diaspora Network, the event highlighted the growing contribution of Filipino nurses not only in clinical care but also in research, education, advocacy and leadership across different parts of the world.
The symposium also provided opportunities for healthcare professionals from different sectors and countries to exchange experiences and strengthen professional networks.
Among the keynote guests was Marife Aczon Armstrong, whose participation reflected the increasing international presence of Filipino nurse scholars and educators.
Speakers also included Benjamin Breboneria, who shared perspectives from nursing education and international workforce development, as well as Michael Whaites, whose presentation highlighted issues surrounding workforce wellbeing, advocacy and equitable healthcare environments.
Australian-based Filipino nurse leaders also participated in discussions and presentations, including Abigail Marlow, Novie Onor, Aleta dela Cruz, Ross Pancho, Analou Cariaga and Kim Santoalla. Their participation reflected the diverse roles Filipino nurses continue to play in healthcare, education, management and community work across Australia.
Recognition also formed part of the symposium, with awards presented to nurses, scholars and advocates for their contributions to healthcare and the profession.
Recipients of the FiND-DAISY Awards were recognised for compassionate care, leadership and health equity, while the Lopez Award and Honor Roll acknowledged achievements in research and advanced education among Filipino nurses worldwide.

Reflecting on the significance of the event, symposium convenor Dion Candelaria said the gathering represented more than an academic conference.
“This symposium is more than an academic gathering. It is a celebration of our collective identity, achievements, and aspirations as Filipino nurses globally. It reminds us that wherever we are in the world, we share a common commitment to excellence, service, and leadership,” Candelaria said.
Outgoing FiND Australia Country Representative Maria Mares said the event also highlighted the value of mentorship and professional support within the community.
“Seeing Filipino nurses from different sectors and countries come together in one space is both inspiring and affirming. This symposium reflects the strength of our community and the importance of continuing to build networks that empower, mentor, and uplift one another,” Mares said.
Participants said the symposium provided opportunities for collaboration and professional learning while reflecting the growing role Filipino nurses continue to play across healthcare systems worldwide.
