A new Filipino–Australian stage production is set to bring comedy, satire and uncomfortable truths about international aid work to Sydney audiences, with playwright Happy Feraren drawing from her own experiences working with NGOs in the Philippines.
Filipino–Australian playwright, comedian and improviser Happy Feraren is set to bring her new satirical play SAVIOR to the stage in a world premiere season presented by Griffin Theatre Company from 16 May to 14 June 2026 at Belvoir’s Downstairs Theatre in Sydney.
Inspired by Feraren’s own experience working with non-government organisations in the Philippines, SAVIOR explores the complicated world of international aid, ambition and power through humour and satire.
The story follows Michelle, a local project officer who joins an American-run NGO after a typhoon strikes the Philippines. What begins as an opportunity to help communities soon becomes entangled in bureaucracy, corporate humanitarianism and personal dilemmas.
According to the production notes, the play examines “the lines between charity and self-interest” as Michelle navigates workplace politics, foreign aid culture and questions of conscience.
The production blends sharp social commentary with comedy, with organisers describing it as “where Utopia meets The White Lotus.”
Feraren is known for her work with SPIT Manila, one of Asia’s best-known improvisational theatre groups, as well as Fillow Talk Comedy, an all-Filipino improv group in Australia.
Griffin Theatre Company Artistic Director Declan Greene praised Feraren’s ability to tackle difficult themes through comedy.
“Having spent years working in NGOs in the Philippines, there is no playwright better poised to tackle the ethical quagmires of this world than Happy Feraren,” Greene said.
“They say the road to hell is paved with good intentions, and Happy has created an eye-opening, surprisingly funny ramble down the one laid – unintentionally – by so many aid organisations.”
Feraren said the production marked a major milestone in her artistic journey since moving to Sydney nearly a decade ago.
“If you told me this was in the cards for me when I moved to Sydney almost 10 years ago, I don’t think I would have believed you,” she said.
“I’ve learned and grown so much with this experience and I’m relishing every moment of it.”
She also reflected on the transition from improvisational theatre to scripted work.
“It’s been an interesting shift coming from the land of unscripted improv theatre that’s loose and unhinged over to the scripted world where everything is structured and planned down to each beat of the scene,” Feraren said.
Directed by Kenneth Moraleda, the production stars Chrissy Mae Valentine as Michelle alongside Chaye Mogg, Mark Paguio and Michael Whalley.
SAVIOR runs from 16 May to 14 June 2026 at Belvoir’s Downstairs Theatre in Sydney, with tickets starting from $48.
