Last chance for Victorian families to take the challenge as sports stars lead by example

.

Sports stars Nathan Buckley, Leisel Jones and Robert Harvey today issued a last minute challenge for Victorian families to be healthier and get more active by signing up for the Premier’s Active Families Challenge before the October 15 registration deadline.

“We’re encouraging more families to take advantage of the warmer weather and sign up for the Challenge before registrations close,” Robert Harvey said.

“To complete the Challenge, families are urged to complete 30 minutes of exercise a day for 30 days from October 2 until November 13.

“This is not only a great way for Victorians to create a healthier and more active lifestyle for themselves and their families, but also to have some fun together,” he said.

Each family that registers for the Premier’s Active Families Challenge before October 15 will receive 15 free YMCA passes, a 15 percent discount at all Victorian Rebel Sport stores and one free child zoo pass.

They will also go into the draw to win a football clinic with former Collingwood captain and Assistant Coach Nathan Buckley.

Following his involvement in the history making AFL Grand Final replay, Buckley called on other families to follow his lead and register and said that he is looking forward to spending more quality time with his family.

“With the football season coming to an end a week later then we had planned, my wife Tania and I look forward to spending more time being active with our two young boys by going for walks together and playing at the local park,” he said.

About to make her splash at the 2010 Commonwealth Games in Delhi, Leisel Jones said that families should take the Challenge as it provides them with the motivation to incorporate exercise into their pre-existing daily routines.

“The beauty of the Challenge is that it encourages you to find opportunities to get active that suit you personally, for example people who lead busy lives can complete their 30 minutes in 5-10 minute blocks of activity across the day,” Leisel said.

“This can be done by taking the stairs instead of the lift or going for a walk to the park and enjoying your lunch break outside.”

The Premier’s Active Families Challenge is now in its third year and part of the Victorian Government’s ‘Go for your life’ initiative.
