Lone Pine Tavern in Rooty Hill joins the Filipino Food Revolution

By Karla Rey

Bringing the flavours of the Philippines to Rooty Hill with a bespoke Filipino food and drink menu, Lone Pine Tavern will take your tastebuds on a tropical holiday this spring! Relish in the traditional tastes that the archipelago is known for including adobo and bistek, rice in both sweet and savoury forms, and vegan-friendly dishes. Wash these down with the legendary San Miguel or cocktails concocted around its native fruits. All these and more in the Pinoy Pop-Up.

“We’ve discovered that while there is a strong Filipino community in the area, there are no ongoing activations and only a few Filipino restaurants. We also have a lot of lovely Filipinos in our crew, so we saw this as an opportunity to create a space for the community to come together and celebrate Filipino food and culture,” says Carly Finch, Marketing Manager at Lone Pine Tavern.

“We worked with our Filipino chefs to develop the menu, introducing dishes from their childhood, and they are excited to be able to cook food that they grew up eating,” says Jason Lucas, Head Chef at Lone Pine Tavern. “The results are dishes that hold those deliciously familiar flavours, using locally available Filipino ingredients as well as fresh Australian produce.”

“We are working in collaboration with Filomates to ensure the activation is as Pinoy as possible yet accessible to our other customers. They are consulting on the menu and other events we are planning,” shares Finch.

This month, Lone Pine Tavern hosted a free Peñafrancia Fiesta with lechon (pig on a spit), buckets of beer, and live music.

“We know that the Philippines have a lot of big festivals, and the annual Peñafrancia is one of them,” continues Finch. “We learned how these celebrations are not just about throwing a party but very much about faith. We reached out to the Nuestra Señora de Peñafrancia Archdiocese of Sydney (NUSPAS) to support their fundraising efforts in running the Fiesta this year. We’re happy to share that NUSPAS ran a raffle at the Fiesta Cultural Program, with Lone Pine gift certificates as prizes.”

Some other festivals on the radar are Sinulog, Dinagyang, and the Ati-Atihan in January. “We have no plans locked in yet, and we’re open to hearing from our patrons,” says Finch. “What we do know is that we would make a great venue for your despidida-de-soltera. Our modern venue is family-friendly, easy to get to, and we’ve got the food and drinks to go with this lovely Filipino tradition.”
