Navigating challenges while celebrating achievements

The Filipino community has experienced an eventful year, marked by various endeavours and accomplishments. From the culinary landscape to social and cultural organisations, the community’s journey has been rich with both successes and challenges.

In the realm of culinary arts, Filipino chefs and restaurants have embarked on a flavourful journey, introducing and adapting Filipino cuisine to the diverse Australian palate. However, this culinary exploration is not without its challenges. The intricacies of melding a cuisine unfamiliar to Australians while meeting the discerning tastes of both Australians and Filipinos pose a considerable feat. Additionally, the lingering effects of the COVID-19 pandemic have added economic hurdles.

Meanwhile, the organisational landscape of the Filipino community in Victoria showcases its vibrancy but is not exempt from challenges. The proliferation of events organised by different Filipino groups has both positive and negative consequences. Duplicate events lead to divided attendance, sponsorships and media coverage. Scheduling events on the same can have several drawbacks:

1. When events from different organisations overlap, it can lead to a division of potential attendees. This might lead to lower attendance for both events, as individuals may have to choose between conflicting schedules. It can also lead to a saturation of the market, making it harder for any single event to stand out and attract the desired audience.

2. Events often require shared resources, such as potential sponsors.

3. Overlapping events can dilute media coverage and public attention. Competing for media coverage or social media visibility may diminish the impact and reach of each event.

Furthermore, these organisations face the issue of donor fatigue. While the Filipino community has been generous in supporting various causes, continuous solicitations for donations risk overwhelming the community. Organisations must strategise and collaborate to ensure a sustainable and supportive community. Diversifying fundraising events is another consideration. The traditional format of fundraising events, often centered around dinner dances with auctions and raffles, has become a standard in the Filipino community. Exploring innovative ways to raise funds can capture the interest of the community and instill a renewed sense of excitement.

Lastly, the rise of social media has provided a platform for community engagement but has also brought challenges. Constructive criticism should be encouraged, particularly in online discussions about local festivals or critiques of Filipino restaurant offerings. Fostering a culture of thoughtful and constructive feedback will contribute to the growth and improvement of the community. These challenges present opportunities for growth and improvement. As we reflect on a busy year, let us collectively work towards creating a more dynamic and supportive Filipino community that embraces diversity.
