Recalling the Filipino children we were

On 9 June, Filipinos in Melbourne’s north gathered to celebrate Filipino culture, marking Philippine Independence Day. The event titled ‘‘Noong Bata Pa Ako”, was organised by Bayanihan in Melbourne Inc., and held at Janefield Community Centre in Bundoora.

A highlight of the event was the cooking demonstration by Princess Anne Uy, an award-winning Filipino-Australian chef. Attendees had the opportunity to witness Princess Anne’s expertise firsthand as she prepared and discussed traditional Filipino ‘kakanin‘, including various glutinous rice and coconut cream-based delicacies, which attendees were able to taste and enjoy.

Event host Lee Montajes warmly led the program through the day. Guests indulged in Filipino treats, fostering a sense of community and shared experience. The atmosphere was further enriched by storytelling sessions where attendees reminisced about their upbringing in the Philippines, sharing anecdotes and traditions that have shaped their identity.

The program included captivating performances of folk dances, including a ‘Malong Dance’ performed by Bayanihan President Versita Tamblyn.

During the lunch break, guests enjoyed exploring various items including Sungka on display. Interactive games and more storytelling followed in the afternoon, highlighting personal journeys like that of Pastry Chef Ricci Carmona who shared her experiences and her passion for creating desserts and her business, Dirty Ice Cream.
