The Child Jesus and St. Joseph Church in Rockdale witnessed a heartwarming gathering on 10 February as over 200 parishioners, including a significant number of the Filipino community, welcomed the newly ordained Filipino Catholic priest, Fr. Rafael Faustino. The special event marked Fr. Faustino’s first visit to the church since his ordination, drawing attendees from various backgrounds to celebrate unity and faith.
Fr. Faustino, originally from Manila, has been eagerly anticipated by the local and Filipino Catholic communities alike. His arrival was celebrated with a ceremony that featured all-Filipino altar servers from St. Dominic Savio School, adding a youthful and promising aspect to the day’s proceedings.
Capturing Community Spirit
The event showcased the cultural diversity within the Rockdale parish and underscored the community’s shared values of faith and unity. A group photo session on the church grounds captured the essence of this vibrant community spirit, with faces from different cultures and backgrounds coming together in a mosaic of faith.
Having completed his philosophy studies at the Holy Cross Seminary in Goulburn and ordained in La Reja, Argentina, Fr. Faustino expressed his deep gratitude towards the community’s warm welcome. His sermon and the celebration of the Latin Tridentine Mass were described as spiritually uplifting by many attendees, who felt a deep connection with the clergy and each other during the event.
Celebration and Cultural Exchange
The day’s celebrations extended beyond the church services, with a Filipino banquet held in Fr. Faustino’s honour. The banquet was a festive occasion filled with laughter, music, and traditional Filipino dishes, highlighting the unique cultural contributions of the Filipino community to the parish.
Fr. Faustino’s visit is remembered as a significant event for the Child Jesus and St. Joseph Church, symbolising the strength of community ties and the universal message of faith that transcends geographical and cultural boundaries.
