Smooth Transition: 5 Tips for Moving from a House to an Apartment

Previous posts

Whether you’ve been looking at new apartments for sale in Mermaid Beach or have finally secured the condo of your dreams in Melbourne, transitioning from a house to an apartment will come with an abundance of benefits and challenges. To help you navigate this exciting but demanding project, we consulted with real estate agents and interior design professionals to develop a list of expert-approved tips. Read on for the advice you need to make your transition to apartment living smooth.

1. Start the process early

This is especially important if you’re facing the added complication of selling your current home and buying or renting an apartment. Lining up your moving dates can be an incredibly tricky juggling act, so the more time you have to prepare, the better.

Of course, all the time in the world is no good if you don’t manage it effectively. So, in addition to starting early, be sure to create a timeline for the move, including key dates and what you need to have prepared when they roll around.

2. Get familiar with your new apartment building’s rules and regulations

Before purchasing your new apartment or signing a lease agreement, it’s crucial to read more than just your contract. You also need to read the rules and regulations of the apartment building to ensure they’re suitable for your circumstances. Ask questions about any points you don’t understand to ensure you aren’t hit with any nasty surprises after you move in.

3. Develop a floor plan for your new apartment

Your apartment building may already have floor plans on hand to give to you. If they don’t, it’s worth taking the time to make your own. You can do this by measuring the dimensions of each room and using an online tool to transform your measurements into a visual representation of the space.

Armed with your floor plan, you’ll be better equipped to understand what you can add to the space. You may find that you can bring most of your existing furniture with you. However, it’s possible that you may have to downsize things like couches, dining tables, and large appliances.

4. Declutter your belongings

Moving is a great time to take stock of your belongings and part ways with things you no longer need or want. If you’re moving into a smaller space, this task is even more imperative. So, take some time to go through your stuff and sort it into the following collections: keep, donate, sell, and throw away.

5. Hire professionals

If you’ve been in your house for quite a while, you probably have far more junk accumulated than you realize. Just when you think you’re getting to the end of it, you’ll realize you haven’t even looked in the back shed or the cupboards in your spare room.

To avoid making the task of decluttering and moving harder than it has to be, we recommend enlisting the services of relevant professionals. If you have a lot of old things you need to throw away, hire a professional rubbish removal service. If you struggle with throwing away old things, consider hiring a decluttering expert. And when it comes time to move everything over to your new apartment, a team of reputable removalists will be your best friends.

Work through each of these tips in turn, and you should have a far easier time making the move from a house to an apartment. You’ll still have a lot of adjustments to make, especially if you’ve significantly reduced your square footage. However, armed with the tips above, you’ll have fewer complications to worry about.
