TEAMS Engages MPs at Victorian Parliament

On 18 February 2025, The Empowered Australian Multicultural Society (TEAMS) had the privilege of being invited by Mathew Hilakari MP, State Member of Point Cook, for an afternoon tea, tour, and discussion on matters affecting the community. Accompanying TEAMS were outgoing Consul General Maria Lourdes Salcedo, Consul Jan Sherwin Wenceslao, Jason Cordi of The Philippine Times, Arlene Lucas, Corina Dutlow as well as officers from the Filipino-Australian Student Council of Victoria (FASTCO).

It was a fruitful and meaningful discussion about issues affecting the Filipino Victorian community.  Concerns were raised about increasing crime in suburbs where a higher concentration of Filipinos live, such as Werribee and surrounds, prompting discussions on better policing, neighbourhood watch programs, and community education on safety. Officials acknowledged these issues and committed to reviewing support strategies.

The impact of higher mortgage rates and higher cost of living was also a major topic. Many Filipino homeowners are struggling with increased repayments, leading to financial stress. TEAMS urged the MPs present to consider relief measures such as financial literacy programs and refinancing options. Officials expressed a willingness to explore potential assistance, and shared a cost saving initiative available through Victorian Energy Compare for energy bill savings, which can be accessed online at https://compare.energy.vic.gov.au/.

A highlight of the visit was the presentation of a Certificate of Recognition by MP Mathew Hilakari, to outgoing Consul General Maria Lourdes Salcedo for her outstanding contributions to the Filipino community in Victoria. Her dedication and tireless efforts in supporting and uplifting Filipinos in Victoria have made a significant impact. The Filipino community deeply appreciates her commitment and service. This recognition is a testament to the positive change she continues to inspire.

The group also had the opportunity to meet with Pauline Richards MP (Member for Cranbourne), John Lister MP (Member for Werribee), Luba Grigorovitch MP (Member for Kororoit) and Ingrid Stitt MP (Minister for Multicultural Affairs).

TEAMS recognised existing government initiatives but emphasised the need for continuous improvement to meet the evolving needs of Filipinos in Victoria. The visit was a step toward stronger collaboration with state representatives, ensuring the community’s concerns are heard and addressed.
