The Commission on Filipinos Overseas (CFO) is transforming its Virtual Sentro Rizal Educational Series into a living online cultural classroom — one that combines heritage education, language learning, identity-building and community participation in a format suited to the global Filipino diaspora.
Launched more than a decade ago as a digital Filipiniana collection, Virtual Sentro Rizal has evolved into a dynamic educational platform that brings Philippine history, arts, language, customs and traditions directly to overseas Filipinos through webinars, virtual field trips and partner-led sessions. The program targets second- and third-generation Filipinos who may feel disconnected from their roots but want accessible ways to reconnect.
Recent sessions have covered Filipino identity and heritage, Holy Week traditions with sociologist Prof. Gerardo Lanuza, Cebuano language appreciation, and digital storytelling as a bridge to the motherland. CFO has positioned these discussions as more than lectures — they are interactive cultural touchpoints designed to encourage pride and belonging among younger diaspora members.
“Virtual Sentro Rizal makes Philippine culture available anytime, anywhere,” the CFO emphasised in recent social media posts, highlighting how the series supports both individual learning and community gatherings abroad.
Open to all overseas Filipinos
Participation could not be simpler. Overseas Filipinos can join upcoming sessions by following announcements on the CFO’s official Facebook page, Philippine embassy websites, and partner Sentro Rizal channels. Many events are free, live-streamed, and open to schools, community groups and families — making cultural education a shared experience even across oceans.
The series builds on Sentro Rizal’s mandate under Republic Act No. 10066, the National Cultural Heritage Act, which established cultural centres worldwide to promote Filipino arts and culture globally. What began as portable digital archives for embassies has grown into a flagship online initiative under CFO Secretary Dante “Klink” Ang II.
Power of partnerships
CFO’s expanding reach relies heavily on partnerships with institutions such as the Cultural Center of the Philippines, the National Commission for Culture and the Arts, Philippine embassies, cultural organisations and diaspora groups worldwide.
Recent efforts include strengthened collaboration with the CCP to bring Filipino artists, educators and cultural practitioners into virtual sessions, alongside discussions on integrating authentic narratives from digital content creators to keep the series modern and relatable.
Recent Philippine government reports have also identified Melbourne as a pilot site and model for diaspora engagement initiatives under the CFO’s expanding overseas programs, making the Virtual Sentro Rizal resources particularly relevant for the Victoria-based Filipino community.
A highlight of the series has been the culinary collaboration with gastronomy advocate Clang Garcia of FoodHolidays.PH, whose episodes explore regional Filipino cuisine, indigenous ingredients and pre-colonial food traditions.
“Food and culture are soft-power vehicles,” Ang noted during Garcia’s March 2026 courtesy visit, underscoring how everyday dishes can help preserve cultural memory among overseas Filipinos. He has also described literature and the arts as among the “most enduring bridges” connecting overseas Filipinos to the motherland.
From its public debut around 2013 to its refreshed 2026 format, Virtual Sentro Rizal reflects the CFO’s broader mission of preserving long-term cultural ties for an estimated 10 million Filipinos living abroad.
As Filipino communities overseas continue to grow more diverse across generations, the program aims to ensure Philippine identity remains a living and accessible presence through digital education, storytelling and cultural exchange.
