What to Expect in Your First Therapy Session

You’ve finally booked an appointment with a therapist. Whatever concern brought you to this decision, it likely took time and courage to get here. But as the session approaches, another question may surface: How should you behave during your first therapy session?

If you know someone who has gone through the process, their insights can help ease your anxiety. But for those stepping into therapy for the first time without a roadmap, the uncertainty can add to the distress. If that’s you, here are some practical insights to help you navigate your first counselling experience.

The initial session typically focuses on introductions and essential information. After completing personal details forms, you’ll meet your therapist, who will begin by checking in with you. This is an opportunity to start building rapport—a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship.

Your therapist will also explain the confidentiality agreement. This ensures that what you share remains private, except in situations where there is a risk of harm to yourself or others. In such cases, therapists are obligated to act under their duty of care.

You’ll also discuss boundaries and policies, including session duration, cancellation guidelines, and the number of sessions available (particularly if you are working with a therapist in an agency rather than private practice). At this stage, you are encouraged to ask questions and clarify anything that is unclear. Establishing mutual understanding early on helps create a safe and structured therapeutic space.

Once these initial steps are completed, the therapeutic process begins. Some therapists may use self-report questionnaires to assess your level of distress. These serve as baseline data, which can later be compared during the course of therapy.

Others may start by asking what brought you to therapy, giving you space to share your experiences. As you speak, the therapist listens and supports you while also assessing your needs, risks, and priorities. This conversation often helps identify the goals you want to work toward in your sessions.

It’s important to remember that therapy is a collaborative process. You deserve to feel safe, respected, and empowered. Being authentic from the beginning—and allowing yourself to be vulnerable—can help build a meaningful connection with your therapist.

At the same time, pay attention to how you feel in the session. If you feel comfortable and supported, that’s a good sign to continue. If something feels off, it’s okay to express this. Your therapist can help explore whether adjustments can be made or if seeking another therapist might be a better fit.

Honesty is essential in therapy. Being open allows the process to be more effective and meaningful. It’s also important to be patient with yourself—healing takes time.

While some services offer a limited number of sessions, you can still work toward specific goals within that timeframe. If needed, you may consider continuing with a therapist in private practice. Before your sessions end, your therapist can guide you on the next steps that best suit your needs.

There is no one-size-fits-all approach to therapy. What matters is staying present in the process. Each session offers an opportunity to learn more about yourself, and allowing your vulnerabilities to surface is an important step toward healing.
