2 Filipinos win in Asian photo tilt

Two Filipinos have risen in Asia to win a regional photo contest on climate change.

The Southeast Asian Ministers of Education Organisation (SEAMEO) announced Filipinos Nikki Sandino Victoriano and Dionisio Salvador, Jr. as two of the three winners of its Asian photography contest which focuses on the subject of climate change.

The contest, which ran from August 3 to October 30, had the theme “Community-based Climate Change Adaptation: Best Practices in Southeast Asia”.

Victoriano won first prize with her “Planting Bamboo” and Salvador grabbed third place via his depiction of a bicycle lane in the tilt which was organised by the SEAMEO Regional Centre for Graduate Study and Research in Agriculture (SEARCA).

The two Filipinos were joined by Thai photographer Vinai Dithajohn who won the second prize through his photo of sandbags used to strengthen defence against flood.

The winners emerged as top picks among the 130 entries from the Philippines, Thailand, Indonesia, India and Bangladesh.

The winners received their cash prizes and plaques of recognition last November 20 at a program held at SEARCA’s office of at the University of the Philippines Los Baños campus. The program coincided with the centre’s 43rd anniversary.
