A Dream Takes Flight: How Pinoy Pride Propels WA Local Artist to Global Stardom

It only takes a few people to believe in someone’s potential to make one big dream happen.

For Beverlin Ybanez, a singing and dancing nurse from Perth, Western Australia, the dream of a lifetime is within reach—all thanks to the faith and collective support of the Filipino-Australian community, showcasing our deep-rooted, shared Pinoy pride.

A registered nurse by day and a performing artist by night, Bev comes from a musically inclined family. Despite being a late bloomer, her passion for music has driven her to actively participate in the Filipino community in Western Australia, performing at various events and even opening for renowned Filipino artists like Vina Morales.

This July 21st, Bev is set to fly to Los Angeles, California, to represent Perth in a global music competition called Star Makers International. In fact, she is the only competitor from Australia.

However, flying to Los Angeles to chase her dreams comes with a hefty price tag. Bev has had to work tirelessly, balancing her demanding job as a nurse while taking on additional gigs to save for her trip. Despite her efforts, the financial burden proved too great for Beverlin to bear alone.

It is in times like these when the innate ‘Bayanihan’ (or communal unity) spirit of Filipinos shines brightly.

This shared pride in supporting our own talent, which we call “Pinoy Pride,” fuels a strong sense of community, and drives us to support the accomplishments of our ‘Kabayan’ (fellow countryman).

Last July 7th, Bev held her very own fundraising mini-concert, which was voluntarily organised by Ms. Sheena Reyes of SBR Events and Entertainment. The venue was generously sponsored by Saladmaster Perth, with additional support from numerous local businesses. All proceeds from the event were dedicated to covering Bev’s expenses for the competition. Moreover, a GoFundMe campaign was launched, drawing overwhelming support from the community… transforming Beverlin’s distant dream into an approaching reality.

This collective support for local talents like Beverlin is a manifestation to the strength of the Filipino spirit and a core aspect of how we demonstrate our Pinoy Pride.
