Mothers are naturally caring, loving, patient and protective. Even before we are born, they already do what’s best for us, like eating healthily and being careful so nothing bad happens to us. When we’re small, they do everything for us, teaching us everything they know. They want us to feel safe all the time. They also prepare us to be independent, to be able to face the reality of life, and to be strong.  We might not know it at the time, but in the end, we realise that our mothers are right.

They are often unappreciated, or worse, taken for granted. But in reality, they are the most important people in our lives.

On this special occasion of Mother’s Day, I thought it’s only fitting to talk about the dearest one to me, my own mother, Connie Algas.

In my personal experience, I never fully appreciated my mother until I became a mother myself. Only then I understood everything she did for me and my brothers. She had done countless sacrifices for us, until now that we have our own families.

Looking back at our childhood, it would have been so difficult raising five children.

Some of my fond memories are:  I remember when we used to do the grocery shopping together, and she used to make me calculate what we had in the trolly so we wouldn’t go over budget.  Every now and then we’d watch movies, eat out or just go window shopping. I remember when she used to sew and I’d be under the sewing machine playing ‘house’ there. During exam times in school, she’d help me review, but oh, how stressful it was for both of us!

Of course, like everyone else, we had our arguments. But that was normal. I am sorry for all the wrong I’ve done and said.

Mum, you taught me so much and it made me become the person that I am.

I sincerely thank you, even though no amount of words would be enough to say my gratitude to you. I’m sure my brothers will join me in greeting you with a very Happy Mother’s Day. We love you and we hope that you will be blessed with many more years to come.

To all the mothers out there, may you all have a Happy Mother’s Day! Be it a simple celebration, as long as we are with our loved ones, or at least in spirit – that’s what’s important. Remember, that you are valuable and you are loved because you’re a mum.
