All hands on deck for first-ever Kamayan Festival in Melbourne

The Kamayan Festival 2025 is set to bring a unique and immersive experience to the Filipino-Australian community and beyond. The Festival will be held on 8 and 9 February 2024 from 10am to 4pm at Queen Victoria Market. Unlike other Filipino food and cultural festivals, this event aims to spotlight the traditional kamayan way of eating, a practice dating back to pre-colonial times when meals were shared communally and enjoyed using hands.

Kamayan, derived from the Filipino word kamay (hand), is more than just a way of eating—it embodies a communal spirit and celebrates Filipino hospitality. Food is typically served on banana leaves, with an array of dishes such as rice, grilled seafood, meat and vegetables arranged for sharing. This dining style encourages togetherness and reflects Filipino cultural values. “This is the first time this tradition has been encouraged at a festival,” shares event organiser Ed Guevarra.

This year’s Kamayan Festival boasts a wide variety of features and activities designed to entertain and engage attendees of all ages. Food lovers will be delighted to find an abundance of Filipino dishes, including the ever-popular lechon (roasted pig), alongside other mouthwatering delicacies.

The Kamayan Festival 2025 isn’t just about food and fun—it’s a bridge connecting generations of Filipino-Australians and inviting people of all backgrounds to celebrate and appreciate Filipino culture. “We are inviting other cultures and cultural performances to showcase what we aim to represent as a Filipino-Australian community,” Guevarra explains. This inclusivity is evident in the diverse lineup of activities and performances—traditional Filipino dances and music will be complemented by multicultural acts, including Brazilian drummers and dancers, who will infuse the event with vibrant energy. Guests are encouraged to join the lively performances and embrace the festive spirit.

One of the festival’s highlights is the free Pinoy Bingo, offering exciting prizes such as a return trip ticket to the Philippines, appliances, vouchers and more. Guests can bring their own bingo cards but must register at the EMG booth on the day. Cards will also be provided to those without their own.
