Opening this February, the USAP (Ugnayang Sining at Pamana / Linkages of Arts and Heritage) Collective, a group dedicated to promoting Filipino-Australian art and culture, invites audiences to embark on a poignant journey of self-discovery through their upcoming art exhibition, “Beyond the South Seas,” at Gallery M, Marion Cultural Centre.
Featuring the works of Althier Alianza, Claire Pasion, Gale Dy, Lourdes Blinco, Mark Dy, Peter Francisco, Shine Eisin Mausisa, Michelle Kenney, and joining the USAP Collective for the first time, the visionary artist and philanthropist Ana Koch, the exhibition delves into the profound connection between identity, nostalgia, and the ocean.
“Beyond the South Seas” transcends the traditional imagery of the South Seas, inviting viewers to explore the intricate tapestry of Australian Filipino experiences. Through diverse artistic expressions, including painting, photography, and mixed media, the artists offer a glimpse into their personal and cultural narratives, weaving together memories of childhood summers, family traditions, and the enduring power of water.
The exhibition juxtaposes works created in the vibrant coastal landscapes of South Australia with those inspired by the breathtaking beaches of the South Seas in the Philippines. It highlights the cultural and historical influences shaping our understanding of the sea and explores the commonalities of the beach experience across two cultures.

“I am inspired by the light, especially the afternoon light in Adelaide which makes everything take on a dreamlike character,” says Koch. “We mostly had sunsets in Sydney so facing west in Adelaide helps the light last longer and take on longer shadows. Sunsets over Somerton Park remind me of my family holidays in the Philippines so I’m always trying to recreate that childhood sense of wonder and joy at being close to the water.”
From the exhilaration of a perfect wave to the serene tranquillity of the shoreline, the artists in “Beyond the South Seas” invite viewers to contemplate the universal human experience of encountering the ocean. They will showcase the diverse ways in which families connect with the shore, highlighting the unique cultural nuances that shape our interactions with the water.
Ugnayang Sining at Pamana /USAP is an Adelaide-based arts collective fostering support and connection for Filipino migrants, Australians of Filipino descent, and all creatives.
Don’t miss this opportunity to embark on a visual journey that celebrates the beauty and diversity of the human spirit, as reflected in the ever-changing face of the ocean.
