Magnitude 5.9 earthquake felt in Victoria, other parts of Australia

An earthquake has occurred in Australia’s south-east coast, including Melbourne, regional Victoria, Canberra and New South Wales.

Geoscience Australia says a magnitude-5.9 (downgraded from 6.0) earthquake was felt around Mansfield in Victoria’s north-east around 9:15am today.

There are reports emerging of significant damage in some parts of Victoria with residents from metro Melbourne reporting violent shaking.

Experts warn that there will be hundreds of aftershocks to occur.

Here’s a video that was taken in Green St, Windsor, Victoria of the effect of the earthquake in Melbourne that was posted on the Pakistani Community Australia Facebook Page.

And here’s an aerial view that was taken by Channel 7.

The 6.0 magnitude earthquake in Melbourne this morning has caused some damage. There are reports of damaged roads in Melbourne’s east and building damage in the city.

Mt Buller’s snow cam took to Twitter footage while the earthquake was happening.

What to do if aftershocks occur

If aftershocks occur, stay safe by taking the following actions:

  • Drop, cover under a sturdy table or piece of furniture and hold on.
