Fil-Aussie Arvin Garcia stuns baking world

Winning the Great Australian Bake Off title following weeks of effort and creativity in crafting desserts is truly “a sweet victory”.

36-year-old Arvin Garcia, a nurse by profession, has made a historic win as the first Filipino to compete and the first male to emerge as Australia’s best amateur baker on the said national television hit series. Now on its 7th season, the show began with 12 talented bakers from all parts of Australia, each aspiring to win the title.

Arvin’s natural talent and passion for baking not only outshone competitors but also captured the hearts and palates of the judges, and devoted food enthusiasts Darren Purchese and Rachel Khoo.

Arvin’s grand finale challenges, namely: a botanical-themed signature cake, intricate Paris-brest for the technical and his stunning showstopper “Rising Phoenix”, have culminated in a showcase of his creative edge, meticulous eye for details, and penchant for storytelling.

Humble beginnings

Arvin’s passion for baking, rooted in his family kitchen, led to his extraordinary accomplishment.

“Growing up in Pampanga, food was always at the heart of our family celebrations,” he reminisces.

But it was the pangs of homesickness and the longing for the flavours of home when he moved to Australia in 2014 that brought him back to the kitchen.

“Food is more than just something we eat – it is a way to express love and connect with others… This is why every bake I make today tells a story or carries a little piece of my culture and memories,” Arvin adds.

Incorporating Filipino heritage flavours and traditions into his creations —from his scones inspired by bibingka to his cheesecake infused with ube—to highlight Arvin’s self-taught skills, creative flair and sheer innovativeness is what set him apart.

Arvin’s triumph brings the opportunity to collaborate with brands through event engagements in the coming weeks.

In addition to the title, Arvin takes home the ultimate baker’s kitchen package from SMEG.
