FILCCA holds 11th biennial conference in Canberra

filccaThe 11th Filipino Communities Council of Australia (FILCCA) National Conference will be held on 17-19 September 2010 at the Rydges Capital Hill ACT.
The Conference aims to provide a forum for the Filipino-Australian community in Australia to come together and work towards a common goal. This year’s conference will enable the community to share, learn and contribute, building on our diverse experiences and strengths towards the development of future strategies. This year’s theme of ‘Collaboration to Achieve Social Inclusion’ will be explored in the different workshops as follows:
  1. Disaster preparedness, planning and disaster response
  2. Settlement of new migrants
  3. Promoting the Filipino language and culture to the mainstream community
  4. Youth – reconnecting with motherland through Lakbay Aral

The Filipino Communities Council of Australia (FILCCA) is the national umbrella body of Filipino community organisations in Australia and a catalyst for better Filipino-Australian relations in the government and private sector. Its constituent members are the recognized peak councils or umbrella bodies of each state and territory in Australia.

FILCCA organises the Filipino National Conference every two years to provide for all leaders and members in the Filipino-Australian community to gather and discuss, develop and implement strategies on issues of state and national level.

This time, the host organisation is the Filipino Community Council of the ACT Inc (FCCACT). It is the umbrella body of a number of Filipino-Australian organisations in Australian Capital Territory (ACT).

Registration of attending delegates will be on Friday, 12 noon to 1pm. The opening ceremony and first plenary session follow after the registration. There will be workshop sessions afterwards until 5pm.

The party or salu-salo will commence at 6pm.

Day 2 on Saturday will highlight sessions that include a lectures on Philippine Language by Manny Assuncion, Functions of CFO by Gregorio M. Jabal, Jr., Lakbay Aral by Lance Alexander S. Velasco, and YGAT – Joekarl Diaz.

One of the main highlights of the gathering is the FILCCA Annual General Meeting and Elections that will be held shortly before lunchtime.

The oath-taking of newly-elected officers who will serve for a term of two years will take place at the traditional Gala on Saturday night. FILCCA will also give citations to deserving  individual and community groups. The Gala event will culminate with production numbers from each State.

The Dulaang Bayan Melbourne Inc. (DBMI), which makes its appearance for the first time in FILCCA Conference, will be FCCVI’s representative by performing a special production number. DBMI is expected to receive an award from FILCCA for its “valuable contribution to the community”.

Day 3 will wrap up with a Holy Mass and a BBQ lunch.

The first Filipino National Conference that saw the creation of FILCCA was held in Melbourne in 1990 under the leadership of Marina Garcia-Ruivivar.

The current FILCCA president is Florence Parker of Tasmania.
