Filipino-Australian film “In Heaven They Sing Karaoke” screening tonight in Thornbury

The Filipino-Australian film “In Heaven They Sing Karaoke” is screening tonight in Thornbury

In Heaven They Sing Karaoke is showing tonight at the Thornbury Picture House in Melbourne’s northern suburb of Thornbury.

In this film, Filipino-Australian filmmaker Matthew Victor Pastor, who wrote and directed it, tells the story of Filipino migrants in Melbourne in a realist melodrama. The film depicts the desperate loneliness and heartbreaking compromises that migrants face in Australia today.

The story centres around an undocumented Filipino living in Australia. To bring his love Dulce to Australia, he asks his best friend to marry her on a spouse visa. While serving as the best man at his lover’s wedding, he hustles to become a drug dealer and passes the point of no return.

Felino Dolloso, whose stage play inspired this film, put on a superb performance. Also starring are Lilibeth Munar, Alfred Nicdao and Celina Yuen.

Presented by Unknown Pleasures (with support from Cinespace Inc.), tonight’s showing is part of a series of screenings curated by Chris Luscri and Bill Mousoulis, featuring the best of Australian indie cinema, both new and old, with discussions with the filmmakers.

Following the screening, there will be a Q&A with Matthew Victor Pastor, moderated by Chris Luscri.
