Filipino–Australian film ‘Jojo Lost His Shoe’ explores family, resilience and mental health

A new Filipino–Australian independent film, Jojo Lost His Shoe, is set for release in 2026, offering a character–driven story centred on family life in Melbourne.

Directed by Felino Dolloso, who also stars in the film, the project follows a family whose preparations for a function are disrupted when a young boy, Jojo, misplaces his favourite shoe. While simple in premise, the story uses the search for the missing item as a metaphor for deeper emotional and relational challenges within the household.

Written by Rex Paragas and shot by cinematographer Ferry Lie, the film explores themes of hope, love, resilience and mental health, set against the backdrop of a Filipino–Australian family navigating everyday pressures.

The ensemble cast includes Mara Nacionales, Leila Gwynne, Christie Rivera, Jenny Dy Tiapco, Auberon Gwynne, Bryan Yap, Aaryan Lalwani, Miles Paras and Dolloso. Producers include Dianne Diaz, Dulce Aguilar, Jade Nacionales, Gina Dolloso and Felino Dolloso.

According to the production team, the film places emphasis on “authentic character–driven drama” and aims to portray the complexities of family dynamics, particularly within migrant households. The narrative highlights how ordinary moments—such as a misplaced shoe—can reveal deeper emotional struggles, while also showing how empathy and support can help families navigate both practical and personal challenges.

The cast features performers with real–life connections, which the producers say contributes to a more natural portrayal of relationships on screen. The film also brings together a mix of experienced and emerging actors, including younger cast members representing the multi–generational experience common in migrant families.

An official trailer for Jojo Lost His Shoe has been released on YouTube, offering an early look at the film’s tone and storyline.
