The Filipino community in Victoria gathered on 12 June at Federation Square to celebrate the 121st Philippine Independence Day.

On 12 June 1898, the Philippines became independent from Spain’s 333 years of colonial rule.

Philippine Honorary Consul of Victoria Felix Pintado led the ceremony that started with the flag-raising ceremony and the reciting of Panatang Makabayan in front of the leaders and members of the Filipino community. Former Honorary Consul-General Virginia Kalong was also present.

Fr Litoy Asis offered a short prayer followed by a message from the consul.

After the program, the attendees posed for the traditional group photo.

This annual flag raising event at FedSquare was first introduced in 2008 by former Honorary Consul Raul Hernandez.
