On June 12, members of the Filipino community in Melbourne gathered at Federation Square to celebrate the 126th Philippine Independence Day with a flag-raising ceremony.
The event began with the Entry of Colors, led by members of Katipunan Australia, Inc., followed by the singing of the Philippine National Anthem, “Lupang Hinirang,” and the recital of “Panatang Makabayan.” These parts of the program were led by Imelda McLean, President of the Kababaihang Rizalista, Inc. Melbourne Chapter.
Attendees included Philippine Honorary Consul in Hobart Rick van Neutegem, former Philippine Honorary Consul in Melbourne Felix Pintado, and Mayor Lana Formoso of the City of Greater Dandenong.
After the flag-raising ceremony, participants were invited to the Philippine Consulate General in Melbourne, located a short walk from Federation Square, for a brunch.
The event provided an opportunity for members of the Filipino community and guests to come together, recognise Philippine Independence Day, and share a meal.
