Bicol Inc. marks 20 years of community service in Australia

The Bicol Communities League Inc. (BICOL Inc.) marked its 20th anniversary on 21 March 2026 with a cultural showcase at Wenty’s Leagues Club, celebrating two decades of community service and unity among Bicolanos in Australia.

The event also paid tribute to the late Nora Aunor, widely regarded as one of the Philippines’ most respected artists and a native of Bicol, recognising her contributions to film, music and the performing arts.

Philippine Ambassador H.E. Antonio Morales commended the organisation for its long-standing role in bringing Bicolanos together and promoting culture, heritage and community engagement within Australia’s multicultural setting.

He noted that the celebration coincides with the 80th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the Philippines and Australia, highlighting the continuing ties between the two countries.

BICOL Inc. also welcomed Albay Governor Noel Ebriega Rosal and his wife, former Legazpi City Mayor Carmen Geraldine Barrameda Rosal, who attended despite ongoing concerns over Mayon Volcano’s activity.

In his message, Governor Rosal expressed appreciation for the organisation’s service to the Bicolano diaspora, citing its work in humanitarian initiatives, cultural preservation, and the promotion of trade, tourism and investment. He encouraged stronger institutional and economic partnerships between Bicol and its Australian counterparts.

The program opened with an invocation led by Fr Mike Gimena, delivered in Bicol, Tagalog and English.

BICOL Inc. Chairperson Fe Biso Moran thanked members and supporters for their continued commitment to the organisation, acknowledging its founders, past chairpersons and council representatives.

A tribute segment honoured Nora Aunor’s life and legacy, highlighting her journey from Iriga City to becoming one of the Philippines’ most recognised performers.

Local artists Gilda Pagaduan and Marcus Rivera performed songs associated with Aunor’s career, recalling her collaborations with Tirso Cruz III, Manny de Leon, Christopher de Leon and Cocoy Laurel.

Fashion and jewellery designer Sanny Cruz of Cruzinni Jewels presented a Filipiniana-inspired collection featuring Sydney-based models Mary Aborde, Samantha Wright, Leila Kate Chan and Jethro Villarante. Angie Xenos and Matthew Pulford were named Lady and Gentleman of the Night.

Performances by the PLCAA Hiraya Dancers, Aisha Cook and Villarante featured Bicol-inspired dance and music. Visual artist Ilana Lapid also created a live painting during the program, while Cook performed Pearly Shells, one of Aunor’s well-known recordings.

An auction of Ilana Lapid’s artwork depicting Nora Aunor, created during the program, along with a raffle draw, was led by Camarines Sur Council Representative Demi Robinson.

The evening concluded with closing remarks from Sorsogon Council Representative Roberto Lastica, with hosting duties shared by Catanduanes Council Representative Jinky Marsh and Paolo Llorando.
