Filipino Stories in Film, Made in Melbourne

Imagine going to the movies and seeing your own neighbourhood and maybe even some people you know on the big screen.  This is what happened on November 26th when The Filipino Artists Collective, Pangkat Sining held a sold out screening at the popular Askal Filipino Restaurant in Melbourne.

Alfred Nicdao and his actress daughter, Charlotte hosted a screening of five short films written, directed and produced by Filipino Australian emerging filmmakers.

The films shown were Present Day by Justin Macawili whose story explored father and son relationship, Lipat Bahay by Pamela Freire was a story told from the perspective of a young girl moving into a new home, Yes Sir/Sorry Ma’am by Theresa Angela was about a BPO worker in the Philippines who deals with day to day work challenges from clients abroad and locally, MUTE by Madison Murphy explored mother and daughter relationship and Thank You All The Same by Justin Villar is a comedy about two brothers breaking into their old primary school to steal an old memento before the older brother goes for his first trip overseas.

The audience laughed, gasp, paused, cheered and applauded for each of the short 15 minute beautifully crafted stories shown on the big screen. The tickets for this event sold out within 7 days of release and the audience response after the screening was so positive that another event is being planned for 2026.
