Filipino word ‘Gigil’ makes its mark on the Oxford English Dictionary

The Filipino language continues to gain global recognition as another uniquely Pinoy term has been added to the Oxford English Dictionary (OED) in March 2025. This inclusion recognises the unique and untranslatable nature of the term, celebrating its significance within the Filipino lexicon.

The word gigil is defined by the OED as “an intense feeling caused by anger, eagerness or the pleasure of seeing someone or something cute or adorable”. That uncontrollable urge to squeeze (your furry pet) or pinch (a baby’s chubby cheeks)? Relatable! But while gigil is often associated with positive emotions, it can also describe intense anger or frustration—sometimes paired with clenched hands or gritted teeth. This duality only adds to its complexity and cultural significance. And it officially joins the ranks of other OED-recognised Filipino words:

  • Pinoy added in 2006
  • Bahala na and Pasalubong added in June 2015
  • Bongga in September 2018 and Trapo added in October 2018
  • Ube added in March 2019
  • Kilig added in June 2019
  • Salakot, Lumpia, Load, CR and more added in March 2025 along with Gigil

Filipinos have taken to social media to celebrate gigil‘s recognition, with many expressing pride in seeing their language represented on an international platform. The inclusion is more than just a linguistic milestone, it’s a celebration of Filipino culture and a testament to the power of language to capture unique human experiences. It acknowledges the depth and nuance of Filipino emotions and shares a piece of Filipino identity. Doesn’t that just make you want to explore more linguistic landscapes of the world?
