Gilas Pilipinas Women Secure FIBA Semifinal Spot with Thriller Against Chinese Taipei

Must read

On Wednesday, the Philippines’ Gilas Women secured their semifinal hopes in the FIBA Women’s Asia Cup in Sydney with a thrilling 92-81 victory over Chinese Taipei.

Led by Vanessa de Jesus’ 25 points, the Filipinas overcame a late surge from Chinese Taipei to secure the win. De Jesus was also a force on the defensive end, recording three steals and two blocks.

Afril Bernardino added 18 points, 10 rebounds, and three steals for Gilas Women, while Jack Animam had a double-double of 16 points and 15 rebounds.

The victory was a major breakthrough for Gilas Women, who had never won a group stage match in the FIBA Women’s Asia Cup since being promoted to Division A in 2015.

“We’re just so happy,” said head coach Pat Aquino. “I think it is time to show that we belong in the FIBA Asia Cup. This is not the last, and we hope to continue winning.”

The game was close throughout, with neither team able to pull away. Chinese Taipei closed the gap to 74-78 with under five minutes remaining, but Gilas Women responded with a 6-0 run to seal the win.

The victory sets up a crucial knockout match against the second-placed team from Group A on Friday. Potential opponents include China, New Zealand, or Korea.

“We know that the next game will be tough,” said Aquino. “But we’re confident that we can compete with anyone.”

The Philippines’ victory was a major moment for the country’s basketball program. Gilas Women have been steadily improving in recent years, and this win is a sign that they are ready to compete at the highest level.

With the semifinals on the horizon, the Filipinas will be looking to continue their momentum and make history.
