How to Ensure a Successful Laser Hair Removal Treatment

Are you planning to get laser hair removal to get rid of unwanted and unsightly hair growth? Compared to other methods, such as shaving or waxing, it offers longer-lasting results. So, if you want to keep your skin flawless for a few months or so, a laser treatment might be a good option. Before you book a treatment, there are preparations you need to make.

How does laser hair removal work?

This cosmetic treatment uses a medical-grade laser to remove hair at the follicle level. It sends a concentrated beam of light to either the hair follicle’s blood supply or pigment, effectively destroying or stunting hair regrowth. This can be done on both the body and face.

Preparing for Laser Hair Removal

Avoid exposure to direct sunlight

Stay in the shade for all of two weeks before your scheduled treatment. Exposure to direct sunlight can cause burns, tanning, or pigmentation that will render the treatment ineffective. Laser removal works better if there is a strong contrast between your skin and hair. Sun exposure tends to increase skin sensitivity as well, resulting in irritation and discomfort.

No fake tanning either

A fake tan is just as bad as exposure to direct sunlight. The risk of burns and hyperpigmentation increases because tanned skin tends to absorb more laser energy. If you love a fake tan, strip it off of your skin two weeks prior.

Keep your skin clear…but not too clear

To prevent discomfort and enhance effectiveness, it’s important to shave before a treatment. Why not wax instead? Because laser hair removal targets hair follicles, it’ll only work if the root is still intact. Since waxing will remove hair from the roots, it’s not the best course of action. Ideally, you should shave twelve to fourteen hours before your appointment. Avoid dry shaving and use a clean and sharp razor.

Don’t use skin products

Don’t use a deodorant, moisturiser, or other skin products on the treatment area on the day of your appointment. Makeup and lotion, for example, create a barrier on the skin that will increase the risk of burns and irritation. Some ingredients in skin care products, like glycolic acid and retinol, can also have adverse reactions to lasers. So don’t use skin care products before and after your laser session.

Proper preparation is key for a successful laser treatment with guaranteed long-term hair reduction. If you avoid sun exposure and fake tans two weeks prior, shave instead of wax, and not use skincare products on the day of treatment, you’re going to get the results you want. Schedule a consultation with Evolution Laser Clinic to get professional advice on what you need to do before, during, and after a cosmetic treatment.
