Keep Your Balconies Safe With Proper Cleaning And Maintenance

A balcony is a lovely beautiful addition to any apartment or upper story, it can provide a place to step outside and enjoy a scenic view of your home’s surrounds. Sitting out on the balcony with a hot cup of coffee in the morning light, or enjoying a nice glass of wine out in the evening breeze is a wonderful option to have in your home!

On the flip side, balconies that are not properly maintained can present a real hazard to you and your family! If your balcony seems a bit creaky from lack of maintenance for whatever reasons, then avoid any possible tragedy and close it off until you can arrange for balcony repairs in Sydney, and let the professionals make it a safe space again! Hopefully, it won’t come to that, we have collected some tips about balcony maintenance and safety to share with you!

Properly Maintaining Your Balcony – A safe and sturdy balcony is ensured when the proper maintenance has been applied to it:

Step 1: Inspect Deterioration And Repair Damage

Be on the lookout for loose, rotted, or warped boards and splinters. You can sand down any splinters or rough areas to keep them smooth on bare feet. Use wood screws and an electric screwdriver to refasten any loose boards, and replace warped or rotted boards with fresh new wood.

If you have stone or concrete balconies check for any cracks or crumbling. Thin cracks can usually be remedied with masonry crack filler or a cement-based patching compound. The crack filler can be applied by moving the dispenser along the crack’s length, then use a trowel or putty knife to apply vinyl concrete patching compound. When you have finished the repairs, paint over them with an appropriately textured concrete finish or coating. If there are large cracks in the floor of the balcony get the help of a professional, those kinds of structural issues can be extremely dangerous!

Also be sure to inspect railings, support posts, and balusters for cracks, looseness, excessive rust, rotting, or missing fasteners that can affect the structural integrity of the balcony and make any simple repairs you can yourself. In the event of something more serious, don’t hesitate to summon professional help.

Step 2: Keeping Things Clean

If you keep your balcony clear of grime, dirt, and water you can greatly lengthen its lifespan, especially in the case of wooden surfaces. Standing water and dirt are certain to hasten the deterioration of your balcony’s surfaces. Clean regularly and keep it free of debris. You can begin by giving it a good scrubbing. Work on the balcony floor with a scrub brush to clear away algae or mildew. Then use a garden hose with a high-power nozzle to spray away any crud left between the floor planks. There you are, clean and safe!

If you regularly perform proper maintenance on your balcony you and your family can enjoy it safely for years to come! Now that you know what to do, relax and enjoy some fresh air and the fabulous view!
