Machetes now banned in Victoria, amnesty period underway

It is now illegal to own, carry, use, buy, or sell a machete in Victoria unless you have a valid exemption or official approval. The ban took effect on September 1, 2025, and classifies machetes as prohibited weapons, with penalties of up to two years in prison or fines exceeding $47,000.

An amnesty period runs from 1 September to 30 November 2025, during which people can safely and anonymously surrender machetes at secure disposal bins stationed outside more than 40 24/7 police stations across the state.

Minister for Consumer Affairs Nick Staikos noted that the Consumer Affairs Victoria Machete Taskforce has already executed 573 in‑store and online inspections, and 2,400 market stall checks, securing strong compliance and choking off supply ahead of the ban.

Police Minister Anthony Carbines, speaking at Heidelberg Police Station, warned that “anyone carrying a machete will face tough consequences,” and emphasised that this is part of a suite of new, tougher laws supporting Victoria Police—including elevated bail tests and enhanced stop‑and‑search powers.

different types of machetes
A machete is a large, broad-bladed cutting knife. They come in different shapes and sizes, as shown in this image.

Exemptions – who’s covered?

Some exceptions apply—but they come with rules:

  • Agricultural exemption: Farmers, horticultural workers, apprentices, or students using machetes for agricultural tasks (like harvesting or sapling maintenance) can keep and use them without formal application, but must provide proof – such as an ABN, payslip, or enrollment document – and keep the machete secure when not in use.
  • Traditional, cultural, or historical exemption: Machetes with genuine cultural, traditional, or historical significance (e.g., items used in cultural dance, handed down generationally, or displayed as part of a cultural heritage) may be exempt—again without applying—but must demonstrate connection to a recognised cultural activity and meet safe storage conditions.
  • Other legitimate uses: If you don’t fall under these categories but still have a valid reason, you may apply for Chief Commissioner of Police approval.

The bigger picture

This ban is part of the Victorian Government’s broader crackdown on knife crime and repeat offenders—bolstered by updated bail laws and new stop-and-search powers.
