Sydney, Australia – In celebration of the 79th Philippines-Australia Friendship Day and Philippine National Heritage Month, the Philippine Consulate General in Sydney launched Makarios: A One-Man Retrospective Exhibition by Filipino-Australian artist Ramon “Mon” Coloma on 23 May 2025. The exhibit ran until 6 June 2025 at Bulwagang Jose Rizal, showcasing Coloma’s creative journey and reflections on identity and culture.
The launch was attended by Australian government officials, members of the diplomatic corps, and representatives of the Filipino community in New South Wales.
Consul General Charmaine Rowena Aviquivil described the exhibition as “a vivid journey of culture and connection” and highlighted its broader impact on cultural diplomacy and industry.
“By showcasing Filipino artistic excellence on an international platform, this exhibition also contributes meaningfully to the growth of creative industries—an increasingly vital sector for cultural exchange, economic innovation, and community engagement,” Consul General Aviquivil said.
She also drew a connection between Coloma’s artworks and bilateral relations.
“Just like the vibrant hues and dynamic energy we see on these canvases, the ties between the Philippines and Australia today are bright, evolving, and full of promise,” Aviquivil added.
Speaking at the event, Hon. Stephen Bali MP, State Member for Blacktown, acknowledged the positive contributions of Filipinos to local communities, citing Starlight Bakery—recently named Best Bakery in Blacktown—as one example. He also reaffirmed the value of cross-cultural exchange in strengthening the social fabric of multicultural Australia.

The exhibit featured a range of Coloma’s paintings that highlight his deep appreciation for his Filipino heritage and life in Australia. The title Makarios, Coloma explained, means “supremely blessed,” and reflects gratitude for his family, cultural roots, and those who inspired him along the way. One of the portrait subjects was even invited to speak during the launch.
Mr. Coloma, who is also the founder of the International Artists League and author of Portraits of Success, has long been active in mentoring young artists. The Consulate previously hosted one of his art workshops in 2024 during National Arts Month, where he guided emerging Filipino-Australian creatives.
The Philippine Consulate General in Sydney continues to support initiatives that promote Filipino arts and culture as part of its broader efforts to strengthen ties between the two countries and their communities.
