Wright: Winning truly an honour

Wright told The Philippine Times after the awarding that she couldn’t believe she won two major titles. “It is still sinking in. I really did not expect it. All the candidates worked so hard for so long, and we had so much fun along the way. For me to have won is truly an honour. I want to thank everyone who helped me but the biggest thank you goes to my parents especially my mum and the other person who deserves a huge thank-you is Roy Carbungco–the success of this year’s Quest, in so many ways, is due to him.”

She said she wants to get involved in the community to make a difference and hope to get more young people involved as well. “Our community has much to be proud of. I will try my best to represent the community with honour and dignity and to promote our country and our culture here in Australia,” she said.

Meanwhile, Byrne said it was an enormous privilege for her to win most of the titles. She plans to assist the Quest Committee with fund raising, lend a helping hand to the incoming candidates and to be a role model to all women of the Filipino-Australian community.

Sharing Filipino culture and tradition

Both Manuel, PFVI Chairman, and Yvonne Bajzek, Chairperson of the Quest, welcomed and thanked all the supporters of the Quest as well as the candidates, their friends and families for their unwavering support.

“The consistent efforts of the candidates and their families help tremendously in maintaining the Philippine Fiesta, with great support to the organisation’s noble mission of preserving and sharing the Filipino culture and tradition, not only to the new generation of the Filipino Australians, but significantly to the Australian multicultural society,” said Ross.

In her speech, Bajzek said, “The Quest is one of the highlights of the Philippine Fiesta celebration and also one of the instruments in maintaining and helping the future development of our very own community centre in Laverton.”

The Panel of Judges were composed of Clarissa Leong, Ilona Lunny, Carmela Sison, Jace Nicola, and Gerry Cabellon. Because of their unavailability, two previous members of the panel, Jackie Climaco-Zulliger and Tom Jenkins, were replaced by Sison and Cabellon.

Two special guest singers graced the event. A ten-year old girl, Sheralyn Hill, and a young and dashing gentleman, Adrian Li Donni, who both entertained the audience with their singing prowess.

All candidates in the Miss and Mrs. Categories, with the exception of Jocelyn Wilder, who backed out after the Talent Night for personal reasons, paraded their elegant evening and Filipiniana gowns amidst their cheering supporters and showcased their wit and intentions for joining the quest while the panel of judges gave each candidate a question to answer as part of the final judging process.

Certificates of Appreciation were presented to the patron sponsors, Philippine Tours and Philippine Airlines, and major sponsors of the Fiesta, namely, UBI TV World/ GMA7, Western Travel, NAB, Imelda’s Hairdressing Salon, Western Union, CTT, and LBC Australia.

Before the proclamation of winners, the following reigning title holders made their final walk: Miss Philippine Fiesta, Anne Tejido; Mrs. Philippine Fiesta, Zeny Lorenzo; Miss Philippine Fiesta Charity, Jane McInerney (not present); and Mrs. Philippine Fiesta Charity, Nenita Ayton.

Australia condemns Maguindanao massacre

0

The government of Australia has expressed its condemnation of the allegedly politically-motivated violence in Maguindanao, Philippines.

In the website of its Embassy in the Philippines, Australia through its Ambassador Rod Smith released the following statement:

“Australia condemns the senseless and brutal killing of civilians and journalists in Maguindanao on 23 November. We welcome the Philippine Government’s commitment to take swift action to bring the perpetrators to justice.

“We extend our heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims.

“Politically-motivated killings and other forms of intimidation have no place in any society. Australia urges all political aspirants to participate in the political process in a lawful and peaceful way.

“Media representatives must also be allowed to report without fear of violence.”

Also included in this official statement, is Smith’s announcement that the Australian government is deeply disturbed by the “increasing lawlessness” in some parts of Mindanao.

The statement came late last week, just as local authorities spent its fourth day digging up bodies of close to 60 people who were murdered in the town of Ampatuan on their way to witnessing the filing of the certificate of candidacy of vice-mayor Esmael Mangudadatu.

The victims, mostly female kin (including the wife and sisters) of Mangudadatu and members of the media who was supposed to cover the filing of COC for the gubernatorial race next year, were all brutally killed by gunshot with some showing signs of torture.

Now known in the Philippines as the Maguindanao massacre, it is now regarded as one of the worst murders in the country during peacetime and also the worst single loss to life of journalists in one day in the whole world.

Smith said that his country, a major economic and political partner of the Philippines, is concerned over “signs of increasing lawlessness in parts of Mindanao”.

“We are deeply concerned…that signs of increasing lawlessness in parts of Mindanao will inhibit our development cooperation activities and prevent the benefits of these programs reaching those who need them most,” he said, while also noting that Australia remains a “committed” development partner of the country.

A few times in the past, Australia has advised its citizens to avoid or be cautious in visiting Mindanao because of terrorist threats. However, it has remained supportive of the country’s efforts to keeping peace and order in the region.

Meanwhile, Australia has issued no travel ban to its citizens in the aftermath of the massacre.

Filo Christmas begins with Pasko sa Nayon fete

0

Trust Filipinos to jumpstart Christmas celebrations wherever they may be, however hard life is proving to be.

Despite the barrage of problems that swamped Filipinos this year, the celebration of the Yuletide season is still coming early to Filipino-Australians by way of the annual Pasko sa Nayon fete organised by the Bayanihan Australia Community Network, Inc. (BACNI).

The group is currently eliciting the support of Filipino Australian individuals and associations to participate in the upcoming 3rd Pasko sa Nayon Christmas Concert which will be held on December 12, 2009 at the Federation Square.

The organisation started staging Christmas in the Village in Melbourne Central Business District two years ago, with the aim of bringing Filipino-Australians together for the Christmas season and beyond.

During its first years, it relied on the generosity of its sponsors to help fund their Christmas event. But this year, the young organisers of the event proudly announced in a press release that they “decided not to seek sponsorship money because we fully recognise the financial downturn faced by small businesses.”

Instead, BACNI will “publicly recognise” the support of the community organisations, media and businesses in the past two Pasko sa Nayon parties by promoting them in this year’s Pasko sa Nayon promotional materials which will be disseminated in shops and in websites.

This year’s Christmas event boasts of 78 talented and generous Fil-Australian performers who agreed to perform and entertain the guests for free on the night. The line-up of performances is expected to include traditional Filipino carols, traditional instrumental pieces, Filipino folk dances, martial arts exhibition, and hip hop dance.

However, performers who are chosen will have the chance to record their music for Pasko Community CD in a studio (in September ), be featured on the Pasko 2009 Souvenir Program (for November printing) and be featured in media coverage by radio stations, PinoyTV, GMA7 and ABS-CBN on the night of the performance.

BACNI also announced earlier that it might produce Pasko CDs which it plans to make available during the event. Its proceeds will cover the Pasko 2009 costs, with the remaining funds to be utilised for the Bayanihan Multicultural Fiesta in the Southern Region in March next year.
