Philippine flag raised at the Federation Square

Filipinos in Melbourne gathered at Federation Square for the annual Flag-raising ceremony held on 12 June 2023 to commemorate the 125th year of Philippine independence from Spanish colonisation. The event was organised by the Philippine Consulate General of Melbourne, marking 17 years of raising the Philippine flag in the heart of the city. Over 200 Filipino-Australians attended the event, including members and leaders of the Filipino community, Katipunan Australia, Philippine Military Cavaliers and special guests.

In a speech by the Victorian Parliamentary Secretary for Multicultural Affairs Nathan Lambert MP, he acknowledged that Melbourne’s diverse communities make up its fairer, stronger and more prosperous society. Victorian Shadow Parliamentary Secretary for Multicultural Affairs Trung Luu MP also delivered a speech recognising the event’s aim to promote a sense of pride and loyalty to the country. He briefly mentioned the significant meaning of the colours of the Philippine flag—red for courage, blue for peace, and white for equality.

With Filipino colours, culture and music surrounding the event, Australian Parliament Chair of the Standing Committee on Economics Dr Daniel Mulino MP noted how Australia and the Philippines have similarities in gaining national autonomy, seeking independence from major global powers, e.g., the UK for Australia and Spain, US and Japan for the Philippines. Nonetheless, both countries now have amazing relations and multicultural backgrounds.

During the event, the Panatang Makabayan or Pledge of Allegiance was recited, all versions of which included the line “Iniibig ko ang Pilipinas”, which means “I love the Philippines”. Monsignor Joselito Asis, Pastor Doroteo Marcial, and Dr. Hassan Younes offered prayers. Meanwhile, Independence Day messages from the Philippine Ambassador, the President of the Philippines and the Department of Foreign Affairs Secretary were read by Consul General Maria Lourdes Salcedo, Consul Ralph Abarquez and Consul Jan Wenceslao, respectively.

Arlan Fajardo of Kapinoy served as the emcee while the Harmonico Choir performed a heartfelt rendition of “Pilipinas Kong Mahal”. Consul Abarquez told The Philippine Times how “very happy and proud” he was because people rallied to celebrate at the historic and iconic square built to celebrate Victoria’s multiculturalism. Additionally, Consul Wenceslao took note of the patriotic and “bayanihan spirit in full display”.
