Progressive Filipinos in NSW to commemorate 50th anniversary of declaration of Martial Law in the Philippines

To commemorate the sacrifices and uprisings of Filipinos during the Martial Law period in the Philippines from 1972 to 1986 under Ferdinand E. Marcos, 1Sambayan Australia and Migrante Australia are calling on their progressive Filipino and non-Filipino networks and individuals in NSW to participate in a vigil on Saturday, 17 September 2022.

Dubbed as ML 50 Never Again Never Forget, supporters will gather at the Blacktown Railway Station (Main Ave) from 11.00 am to 12.00 noon and walk to Blacktown Library for the program happening between 12.40 pm and 2.00 pm.

This month, the Philippines will commemorate its 50th anniversary since the late dictator Ferdinand Marcos Sr declared martial law on 21 September 1972. Marcos Sr’s regime was later overthrown by the broadest alliance of people in 1986.

“Lives were at the worst situations under the martial rule, and there’s no sign of a better situation under the current rule of Marcos’ son, President Bongbong Marcos Jr.,” 1Sambayan Australia Chairperson Chona Davidson and Migrante Australia NSW Spokesperson Edwin Subijano said in a statement.

“With historical revisionism being one of the administration’s first move, the administration has been consistent with the previous Duterte government’s attack on its own people; the disappearances, illegal arrests, and red-tagging. No sight of real land reforms, nor any effort to address any issue that the broad masses have been campaigning for.

“This coming Saturday 17th of September at Blacktown Railway Station, we will walk towards the Blacktown Library square where we will hold a short program, and aim to share experiences and solidarity messages to depict the real picture of Martial Law and combat Philippines historical revisionism. Your presence and support will be highly appreciated.”
