From OFW to ‘Global Filipino Icon’: How Engr. Russell Matusa is redefining engineering with Generative AI in Australia

Recognised among the Top 100 Global Filipino Engineers, the JLL facilities manager is using AI to cut energy waste and put Filipino talent on the world stage.

Engr. Russell Robert Genovia Matusa is redefining the boundaries of the engineering profession by successfully bridging the gap between traditional mechanical infrastructure and the frontier of Generative AI. Recently honoured as one of the Ten Global Filipino Icons of 2026 in Dubai, Matusa’s trajectory exemplifies a rare synthesis of technical mastery, environmental stewardship and digital innovation.

Matusa’s academic foundation is exceptionally broad, reflecting his belief that modern leadership requires a multidisciplinary perspective. He holds degrees in Mechanical Engineering Technology and Mechanical Engineering from the Technological University of the Philippines Visayas, alongside a degree in Marine Engineering from UC-METC. His commitment to environmental responsibility led him to earn a Master’s degree in Environmental Science from the University of the Philippines. After moving to Australia as an international scholar, he completed an MBA in Project Management at Kaplan Business School, where he was recognised as a High Achiever Awardee.

Currently, he is pushing the limits of the field by pursuing a Doctorate in Generative AI at Torrens University Australia. Matusa recalls that this moment happened while managing large‑scale facilities and engineering operations because he “realised that no matter how experienced an engineer is, traditional methods simply cannot keep up with the complexity of modern infrastructure”. He observed that while teams were “dealing with thousands of data points — equipment behaviour, energy patterns, environmental conditions — yet most decisions were still reactive”. This led to his conclusion that “AI is the future of engineering.”

In his current professional capacity as a Facilities Manager at JLL Australia, Matusa oversees major corporate accounts (including AIA, Telstra, JPMorgan and BlackRock) across Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane. His research in Generative AI explores how digital twins can create buildings that “think” for themselves. He describes a future corporate office where “the HVAC system automatically adjusts based on occupancy, weather and predicted usage” and “maintenance teams receive alerts before equipment fails”. This results in a workplace that is “smarter, greener and more cost‑efficient,” he said in an interview with The Philippine Times.

Matusa asserts that “Gen AI doesn’t just improve sustainability — it accelerates it” by enabling “predictive maintenance that prevents energy waste and equipment failure” and “real‑time optimisation of HVAC, lighting and building systems.”

Beyond the corporate sphere, Matusa serves as the Executive Vice President of PSME Australia. He was a central figure in the historic chartering of the chapter in late 2025. His primary goal for the organisation is to “elevate Filipino engineers to global competitiveness” by “building strong networks with industry leaders in [the] Oceania region” and “supporting Filipino engineers in their migration, accreditation and career pathways through the PSME AU platform”. He emphasises that he wants “Filipino engineers in Oceania to be recognised not just as workers, but as innovators, leaders and contributors to national development.”

The year 2026 has marked a pinnacle in Matusa’s career, with accolades including the Top 100 Global Filipino Engineers and Asia’s Influential Leader Award. Despite these heights, he urges young professionals to “be bold, be curious and never stop learning” because “the world is changing fast — and Filipino engineers have the talent, resilience and creativity to lead that change”. He concludes that a “global journey starts with one brave decision.”
