On 18 May, the Visayan Association (VAA Inc.), with the support of PAGASA and in coordination with PCC NSW Inc., revived a much-loved Filipino tradition with the first Santa Cruzan and Flores de Mayo at All Saints Catholic Church, Liverpool. Rev. Fr. Paul Monkerud officiated the Holy Mass.

If there is one Philippine festival known for its grandeur, beauty, and elegance, it is the Flores de Mayo (Flowers of May), a cherished celebration honouring the Blessed Virgin Mary. The month-long devotion culminates with the Santacruzan — a vibrant procession that commemorates Queen Helena of Constantinople’s discovery of the True Cross.

The day began with the statue of the Virgin Mary entering the church on a decorated float, followed by a procession of “Queens” and “Princesses,” each representing different virtues and titles of the Blessed Mother, along with angels and flower girls. After the Mass, participants and the congregation prayed the Holy Rosary while processing around the church grounds. The celebration continued in the Parish Hall with a festive program.

In the Parish Hall, each participant introduced themselves, explaining the significance of their title. The stage came alive with performances from singer Miss Sharlene Gamo, the Visayan Dance Troupe, a dynamic Michael Jackson tribute by Aaron, and a youth performance from All Saints Liverpool Antioch with special guest Ms. Dai Le. A surprise dance duet by Mon Gaspi and Ms. Dai Le delighted the audience.

Distinguished guests included Ms. Dai Le, MP Federal Member for Fowler; Parish Priest Fr. Paul Monkerud; community leaders; and many families and friends.

It was a festival enjoyed by many across diverse communities. While Filipino-Australians largely supported it, it was heartening to see members from other cultural and linguistic backgrounds join in the celebration. The banquet of sumptuous food was a highlight, generously contributed by donors including Alice Jones, Naty Cacamo, Edna Voros, Cora Veasey, Sarah Salazar, Elsie Saguin, Dian Ford, and many others who donated sweets.

The Visayan Association provided lechon, chop suey, and beef caldereta, adding to the festive spirit.

Many expressed their heartfelt thanks to President Jhun Salazar for reviving the Santa Cruzan and Flores de Mayo in Liverpool. There is already great anticipation for next year’s celebration!
