Simbang Gabi, a cherished tradition among Filipino Catholics, is a sequence of nine Masses leading up to Christmas. This custom, initially rooted in the Philippines, has now spread to Filipino communities in Australia as part of their Christmas preparations.
In Australia, these Dawn Masses, also known as Simbáng Gabi, are conducted daily from December 16th to the 24th. The timing of these Masses varies, with some starting as early as 4:00 am and others at 6:30 am. While most Masses are held in the morning, some communities opt for evening services. Additionally, there are variations in the schedule, with some beginning the series on December 15th and concluding on the 23rd.
The culmination of Simbang Gabi falls on Christmas Eve, known as Misa de Gallo (Spanish for “Rooster’s Mass”). This final service holds a significant place in the cultural traditions of the Philippines.
