X Factor Australia’s newest singing sensation and grand winner, Cyrus Villanueva is sending a big thank to the Filipinos and his fans all over the world for supporting him from day one of the competition. “I just want to thank all of my fans, wherever you are in the world. Without you all, my job as a singer wouldn’t be the same. I strive to release new music and perform everywhere because of you all, and my fans are really the ones who make everything I do worthwhile,” he told The Philippine Times in an interview on 3 December 2015.

Aside from his powerful voice, the 19-year old Filipino-Australian has captured the hearts of his audience due to his natural humility. Having a Filipino father who taught him the ABC’s of singing, Cyrus has a strong connection to the Philippines. “When I think of the Philippines, I automatically think of memories of playing basketball in the streets with my cousins. I definitely look forward to playing some more 3 on 3 when I return!” he said.

Cyrus’ humility and inspiring personality endeared him to his Filipino-Australian fans who can quickly pinpoint such unique trait. He pays tribute his father: “My father is a musician, and I’ve seen how happy and positive he is when he performs. In general, he always treats everyone so kindly, and that is something that I have witnessed from a very young age and has been handed down to me. I’m so grateful for the person he has shaped me to be,” he said.

His debut single, “Stone,” took the top spot from Adele in Australia’s iTunes listings when it was released on 24 November. His song also overtook Justin Bieber’s “Love Yourself” and “Sorry.”

Cyrus told The Philippine Times that his X-factor journey is life changing and an unforgettable experience. “It was incredible! There was a lot of hard work that was put into making each show a success, so it could be quite challenging. But going out on the stage each week and being given the chance to perform made all the hard work pay off. I grew so much as a person and as an artist, and it is an experience I will never forget,” he said.

Now busy promoting his single and having special appearances and media interviews, Cyrus is looking forward to perform in the Philippines and Australia. “It is definitely something I plan on doing in the future. Live performances are by far my favourite thing to do as an artist, so I’m certain you’ll be seeing me very soon,” said the young Wollongong, NSW resident.

Another Filipino-Australian, Marlisa Punzalan bagged last year’s X Factor Australia title making it a back-to-back victory.
