‘The Girl on the Train’ tops box office in North America

LOS ANGELES, Oct 10 (PNA/Xinhua) — Universal’s “The Girl on the Train” ranked the number one movie in North America this weekend, surpassing “Miss Peregrine’s Home For Peculiar Children,” the last weekend winner.

Adapted from Paula Hawkins’ bestselling novel, “The Girl on the Train” opened at 3,114 locations in North America with an estimated sales of USD24.7 million. First-night moviegoers ranked the film a so-so “B- ” on CinemaScore, and critics gave it a poor 44 percent of positive rating.

Audience breakdown for “The Girl on the Train” was 68 percent female vs. 32 percent male, and 45 percent of the audience were under the age of 30.

Globally, “The Girl on the Train” opened in 34 territories with an estimated 16.5 million dollars, which it got about 8.5 million dollars in the UK and 4.4 million dollars in Australia.

A Tim Burton feature, “Miss Peregrine’s Home For Peculiar Children,” was in second place with 15 million dollars in weekend sales, dropping 48 percent compared with last weekend. It has grossed over 51 million dollars in 10 days.

“Deepwater Horizon” was third, with 11.8 million dollars this weekend and 38.5 million dollars in 10 days. It has dropped 42 percent in ticket sales this weekend compared with its first weekend of release.

This weekend also saw Disney’s animated film “Finding Dory” become the 27th film to ever cross 1 billion dollars worldwide, making it the third Disney release of 2016 to cross that mark.

Rounding out the top 10 movies were “The Magnificent Seven” (9.2 million), “Storks” (8.5 million), “The Birth Of A Nation” (7.1 million), “Middle School: The Worst Years Of My Life” (6.9 million), “Sully” (5.3 million), “Masterminds” (4.1 million) and “Queen Of Katwe” (1.6 million).
