What is a KVM Switch, How Does it Work, and Who Might Benefit from Using One?

A keyboard video and mouse (KVM) switch is a smart device that lets you manage several computers with just one set of controls. KVM switches are particularly useful if your requirements are to save space, improve efficiency and maintain control over various computer systems.

A KVM switch is very straightforward to use. First, you will need to connect it to each of the computers in your systems via standard ports used for your keyboard, monitor and mouse. You will find that the KVM switch itself has dedicated ports for these items and also output ports for each of the computers within your system that you wish to control. You will be able to easily switch control from one computer to another either via a switch on the KVM unit or by using a keyboard shortcut or via dedicated software. The latest KVM switches can also cope with high-definition video and USB devices thus rendering them extremely flexible.

In fact, there are different types of KVM switches which are all designed for specific needs. The more basic models can be used in small offices or home computer setups and are designed to control two to four computers. More advanced models are designed to manage hundreds of computers and tend to be used in data centres or within large companies. Some KVM switches are even network-capable and are set up to allow you to control computers via the Internet. This is of course an excellent design feature for those IT administrators who have the need to manage complex systems remotely.

The KVM switch can offer users a range of benefits. The first thing you user will notice is improvements in the organisation of the workspace. Rather than trying to work on a desk that is full of clutter with keyboards, mice and monitors, your office space will operate with just one set of these for all your computers. Everything will immediately feel more efficient and better organised because it is! You will save money by not having to buy all these peripheral items for each and every computer in your office. Your energy bills will also be lowered.

KVM switches are even more useful if you have complex computing needs in your working environment. In a data centre for example a KVM switch will allow you to manage multiple servers from one single console. This will greatly improve management efficiency and make it quicker and easier to switch between systems. For traders who need to interact with multiple systems at the same time a KVM switch will feel like a godsend. Even people working at home or in small offices with multiple computers will benefit from the use of a KVM switch. A graphic designer for example will be able to work on multiple projects using different computers simultaneously. Gamers who like to use separate machines for their gaming, streaming and other online activities will benefit from a more streamlined computer setup. In fact, the versatility that comes from utilising a KVM switch offers great systems solutions for a wide range of users both professional and private.
