On 30 August, the Philippine Consulate General in Sydney held Wika at Sulat: From Words to Script – A Tagalog and Baybayin Journey to mark the culmination of Buwan ng Wika 2025.
The event at Bulwagang Jose Rizal gathered families, students, and community members to celebrate the Filipino language and explore its roots in both spoken word and ancient script.
Consul General Charmaine Rowena C. Aviquivil opened the program with welcome remarks, emphasising the importance of preserving the Filipino language and culture in Australia.
The morning’s highlight was a workshop led by the Filipino Saturday School of NSW and cultural advocate Mark Vincent Ong. Attendees practised simple Tagalog phrases and tried writing in Baybayin, the pre-colonial Filipino script, some for the very first time.
Community participation also shone through. The Tagalog Association of Australia shared their efforts to promote the Filipino language among the youth, while students from the Filipino Class at SCL Bankstown Girls Campus gave short but lively presentations that drew applause.
The program ended with a group photo and Filipino refreshments, rounding off the Consulate’s Buwan ng Wika activities on a warm note of fellowship.
Vice-Consul Diana Marie D. Jimenez-Leomo, who coordinated the program, said the event highlighted the continuing interest in Filipino heritage among the community in New South Wales.
