Victorian Education Minister Martin DixonMore than 42,000 students will put their written skills to the test at today’s English exam – the state’s biggest VCE exam.

Education Minister Martin Dixon wished students all the best for a successful exam season, especially the 50,874 students eligible to complete school and graduate with their VCE.

“The final VCE English exam is always a milestone but it is important to remember all the good work to get to this point,” Mr Dixon said.

“While the exams are a test of skill and knowledge, they also give students an opportunity to demonstrate understanding gained through years of learning.”

Mr Dixon said English was the largest of the written exams, with 42,636 students sitting the three-hour exam, along with 3,431 sitting the English as a Second Language (ESL) exam, in 495 examination centres around Victoria.

In total, 82,465 students will embark on at least one VCE exam, with more than half of these being female students. There are also 841 mature-age students and around 470 sets of twins, three sets of triplets and one set of quads undertaking a VCE exam this year.

The top five subjects with the most students (after English) are: Further Mathematics (31,172 students), Psychology (16,099), Mathematical Methods CAS (15,820), Health and Human Development (13,273) and Business Management (13,099).

The VCE written exams will conclude with the Indonesian written exam on Thursday, November 22.

“I encourage students to remember that the VCE is just one pathway to further training and employment and there are many options once they finish school that can lead to career success,” Mr Dixon said.

“I congratulate each and every student embarking on the VCE and wish them all the very best as they head into the next stage of their lives.

“I would also like to take this opportunity to thank all the parents, guardians, teachers, principals and school staff for the important role they play in supporting students during this time and encouraging them to pursue their aspirations once they finish school.”

VCE results will be available from 7am on Monday 17 December 2012. Students can access results via the Internet, SMS (requires pre-registration) or the mail.
