Filipino tennis star Alexandra Eala wins Melbourne’s Kooyong Classic

MELBOURNE–Filipino tennis player Alexandra Eala claimed the women’s title at the Kooyong Classic in Melbourne, securing the Evonne Goolagong Cawley Trophy after a composed victory over Donna Vekić at the historic Kooyong Lawn Tennis Club.

Eala’s win was one of the defining moments of the 2026 Kooyong Classic, drawing strong support from the Filipino community across the three-day tournament. Her presence on court, backed by a visibly engaged crowd, added a distinctive atmosphere to the annual lead-up event to the Australian Open.

Tournament Director Peter Johnston praised Eala’s performance and the impact she made during the tournament.

“Alexandra is an amazing young star who has burst onto the scene,” Johnston said. “The support from the Filipino community was incredible, and we were thrilled to welcome her to the Kooyong Classic as she builds toward what looks to be a huge year ahead.”

By lifting the newly created Evonne Goolagong Cawley Trophy, Eala joined a respected list of women’s champions at Kooyong, alongside players such as Mirra Andreeva, Peng Shuai and Belinda Bencic.

The men’s title was claimed by Karen Khachanov, who received the Lew Hoad Memorial Trophy after defeating world No. 31 Frances Tiafoe in a high-quality match. Khachanov’s victory placed him among past Kooyong Classic champions that include Jannik Sinner, Sir Andy Murray, Roger Federer and Andre Agassi.

The 2026 Kooyong Classic once again highlighted the tournament’s appeal, combining elite tennis with an intimate setting that allows fans close access to international players. Strong crowds attended across all three days as the famous Kooyong lawns hosted another summer showcase of the sport.

The tournament concluded with both champions recognised for their performances as they prepare for the season ahead.
